SAVING THE CASPIAN’S FUTURE – THE RAW FACTS
As a responsible breed society, CHS must make every effort to retain a wide genetic base to the Caspian breed. We must stop the potential loss of the Caspian’s unique characteristics and prevent genetic weakness through inbreeding.
But we don’t have forever! Caspian numbers are still too low for safety and we cannot be complacent. Some bloodlines are dangerously low…
Caspian Breeders around the world need to interchange bloodlines to preserve the Caspian to expected breed standards. Artificial Insemination makes this possible, using frozen and transported semen from lines otherwise unavailable to them.
An International Caspian Horse Gene Bank must be established before some of the rarest Caspian bloodlines die out. As Caspian-lovers, can we bear to stand by and do nothing while this happens?
Hard facts, hard work and good intentions have awakened us to the dangers of doing nothing, but for the Gene Bank to happen within a realistic timescale - money will have to be spent.
